Just a four hour drive from Srinagar, there lays a small beautiful village named Aru in Pahalgam which is the base village for Tarsar Marsar. 


Tarsar Marsar trek's location is exactly in Aru village. It is in the Anantnag district of Srinagar. If you are alone, you can take a sharing cab from Srinagar to reach Aru which you will find the most suitable and easiest way to reach Aru.

ABOUT TARSAR MARSAR LAKE TREK


The trail starts right out of the base village Aru. It is a gentle but long climb from the village Aru to Lidderwat covering a distance of 10 km in 5 hrs. You can see the entire Aru village after a five minutes of ascent. The trail takes you to the cluster of Fir trees. After half an hour climb, there is a small clearing where you can take a short break and enjoy the mesmerizing surroundings.


Continuing on the trail with the forest thinning out progressively, about an hour later you will witness that the trail leaves the cluster of tree completely and threads to the open grassland.


After half an hour later, the trail crosses two clear streams and the second one has a wooden bridge over it. The water of these streams is completely safe for drinking. It's another hour journey to Lidderwat from that bridge. 


Lidderwat is one of the most beautiful and picturesque campsite. This campsite is at the height of 9,131 ft.  It is surrounded by mountains and Lidder River flowing right nearby. You will find horses and flocks of ships which are being grazed by Gujjars here freely. It is one of the prettiest sights.  You can enjoy the lovely campsite experience near Lidder River. The natural color of the river is light blue which is hardly seen in rivers. 


It comes from the Kolahai glaciers directly due to which it has elegant colors.

The next destination from Lidderwat is Sheikwas which is 5.6 km and it takes around 5 hour to reach there. Starting with 1 hour of gradual ascent leaving the river below, you climb very quickly into the pine forest.


Streams keep running along the trails. Once you reach the Sheikwas campsite, you will find the view very fascinating. For those who visit Tarsar Marsar trek, Sheikwas is extremely pretty camping ground. You can see the Snow Mountains from the Sheikwas campsite.


There is a lake named, Jadsar Lake which is 45 minutes away from Sheikwas camp ground. It is not a huge lake bit is situated in the centre of mountains. People visit this lake from the Sheikwas campsite and return back to the campsite.


Trail from Sheikwas to Tarsar climb into a ridge that overhangs from a stream. You will find boulders patches on the trail. Shepherds are normal site on the trail. The campsite of Tarsar ground is at 12,449 ft. and is site to behold. 


Tarsar Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake. The morning sunrays turn the lake golden when hit the shores, the moment is just magical.

On the other side of Tarsar pass is a beautiful valley leading towards the Sundarsar Lake. The trek towards the Sundarsar campsite is also filled with patches of boulders at some places. It is at the height of 12,946 ft. 


From the Sundarsar campsite, the hiking towards Marsar Lake takes 2 hrs to go. It is at the height of 13,201 ft. which makes it the toughest lake in Kashmir and it has an extremely wonderful view. Marsar Lake is a twin of Tarsar and it is hidden under the clouds and fog which beautifies it more. 


During descend, take the different path to Sheikwas, from there, it will take only 30 minutes to reach Homwas. The trek path from Sundarsar campsite to Lidderwat has a huge rock which becomes the great spot of attraction.  The distance of base of the trek, Aru from Lidderwat is 13 km.


Tarsar Marsar Lake trek is so exceptionally challenging but equally humbling at the same time. You will see some breathtaking views that you can't even expect to exist.

BEST TIME TO VISIT TARSAR MARSAR LAKE TREK


The view of Tarsar Marsar trek shows you Kashmir at really its best and the best time for Tarsar Marsar trek to visit is from July to September. It is a monsoon trek but Kashmir lies mostly in the rain shadow region of our country so it doesn't rain too much to hamper your trek. 


The weather remains pleasant in these three months. The temperature in daylight usually varies from 17°Celsius to 20° Celsius and in night time it is 3° Celsius to 4°Celsius.


In July, the snows have just melted, so if you want to see the few patches of snow around Tarsar Lake, it is the ideal month to go. The greenery and the flowers bloom at their best in August due to slight rain.

You can have a wonderful view of Tarsar Marsar trek in August due to this blossom. In September, the grass turns little brown but the weather remains extremely clear. The reason why Tarsar Marsar's beauty stands out from the other treks is because of the three lakes - Tarsar, Sundarsar and Marsar. The maximum altitude of the trek is 13,201 ft. The Tarsar Marsar trek distance is 47.6 km and it takes almost 7 days to complete the trek. 


This trek is apt for the people who have some experience in trekking as this trail requires endurance and strength. The trek is easy at some parts but also have steep ascent and boulders which makes Tarsar Marsar trek difficulty at a moderate level.
